Based on a true dream, the subject matter in this piece is a surreal scenario where a girl is fishing alone on a small dinghy boat when a tug on the fishing line reveals that her first and only catch of the day is actually a gigantic orca whale.

 

The whale in the painting is represented as a monstrous goliath not only emerging from a surface underneath the water, but it swims underneath a second surface where the girl is peacefully fishing. This dream also portrays the whale as a possible overwhelming event for the lonely girl, where her fate is determined by how she handles her unexpected situation that surfaces out of the blue.
