Man with a Walking Stick
Using a nude male model, this in-class exercise conveys the pose and emotions of a human figure through the use of geometric shapes formed with color.
The somber figure is sitting in a hunched over posture with his chin resting in his hand and a walking stick readily grasped in the other. The overall impression that he is surrounded in warm reddish colors on one half, and cooler blues on the bottom half suggests that he in a location where light is diffused across a wall. The golden halo shape overlapping the figure alludes to a form of light flaring from a source somewhere on the wall while the form directly to the right is what appears to be a lamp with a shade.
Ultimately, this creates a setting similar to a late-night bar where one might come to sit and ponder while having a drink. The color scheme makes him distinguished from the location, yet also blends in as if his melancholy emotions are merged with the mood of the bar scene.
